Jharkhand police fired tear gas shells, used water cannons and carried out baton charges after thousands of protesters broke through barricades and advanced toward the state assembly building in Ranchi on Monday, according to footage and accounts reviewed by multiple outlets. The demonstrators, who have maintained a sit-in at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium since July 25, threw stones during the push, leaving three officers injured, a senior police official said. Superintendent of Police Paras Rana stated that about 90 percent of the students remained peaceful but a minority refused to heed even their own representatives, forcing officers to apply minimal force for a short duration because the crowd consisted largely of young aspirants. The clash marked a sharp escalation in a 16-day agitation that began peacefully with hunger strikes and open-air sleeping arrangements at the stadium.
The protests centre on demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into alleged paper leaks, result manipulations and tampering with OMR sheets from the 14th JPSC Combined Preliminary Competitive Examination held in April and subsequent JSSC-CGL tests, The Hindu reported in its overview of the unrest. Results released in July sparked outrage after leaked answer sheets appeared on social media and some high scorers reportedly answered far fewer questions correctly than expected, according to accounts gathered by local journalists. The Jharkhand government on Sunday agreed to cancel the disputed 14th JPSC preliminary examination along with two backlog tests from 2023 and 2025 following six hours of talks with student representatives, The Hindu reported. Three members of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission have resigned and former chairman L. Khiangte, who stepped down on July 22, was arrested on Monday as part of an ongoing probe by the state CID, Gulf News stated. Authorities have also carried out raids across multiple districts and seized documents, while more than a dozen people have been detained in connection with the demonstrations, according to police figures.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren insisted that vested interests were trying to disrupt democracy in the state and that the agitation should not be politicised, a statement issued after the weekend negotiations. Soren’s administration maintained that 98 percent of the protesters’ demands had been met through the cancellations, resignations and an internal CID investigation already under way. Despite those measures the students have vowed that the agitation will continue until a full CBI and Enforcement Directorate probe is ordered into all irregularities involving both JPSC and JSSC examinations.

The Jharkhand government has reiterated that its CID investigation will proceed without delay and that justice will be delivered to those whose careers have been jeopardised by the alleged scams. Police have urged demonstrators to maintain calm while their representatives continue dialogue with authorities on the remaining demand for a CBI-led inquiry.
