The Department of Homeland Security announced the arrest the following day while releasing an image of Yiannopoulos and stating that the British citizen had chosen to overstay after entering the country legally through New York. An immigration judge had issued the final order of removal on July 22 after he failed to appear for a scheduled hearing. He will remain in custody until deportation, according to the department, which directed inquiries to its Louisiana offices.
Public ICE detention records place the 41-year-old at a facility in Louisiana with contact instructions routed to the Enforcement and Removal Office in Alexandria, some 200 miles from the arrest site. The operation occurred at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport where Yiannopoulos had traveled ahead of a scheduled concert by musician Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, multiple outlets including TMZ, Reuters and Al Jazeera reported. The New York Times noted that Yiannopoulos first arrived in the United States in 2015 on an O-1 visa reserved for individuals of extraordinary ability when he joined Breitbart News.
Far-right activist Laura Loomer claimed credit for prompting scrutiny of his status, writing on X that she had reported him to authorities in 2024 and last year after a public falling out that included her accusations of him inciting violence. Loomer, who once allied with Yiannopoulos before their split, called the outcome an instance of him being “Loomered” and urged the Justice Department to investigate former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene for allegedly hiring and housing him while he lacked valid papers, Forbes and the Daily Caller reported. Greene had employed Yiannopoulos in 2022 to assist with her podcast, according to those accounts.
Yiannopoulos gained early prominence as a Trump supporter, headlining a Gays for Trump event at the 2016 Republican National Convention before later posting on X that the president had lost his way under foreign influence. He assisted Ye during the rapper’s 2020 presidential bid and maintained ties to other conservative figures even as he faced repeated controversies over statements on feminism, race, Muslims and transgender issues. A 2017 scandal involving comments that appeared to condone pedophilia led to his disinvitation from CPAC and resignation from Breitbart, though he denied the interpretation and attributed his words to personal childhood experiences, according to contemporaneous coverage.
The commentator had repeatedly advocated for aggressive immigration enforcement on X, including calls for on-the-spot deportations at checkpoints in supermarkets and other public places as well as total legal immunity for ICE agents, Reuters and CNN noted from his posts. In a June 2025 message he wrote that the country must deport millions because without that nothing else matters, a position he contrasted with his own circumstances in the current case. Yiannopoulos did not respond to comment requests from the BBC, The New York Times or other organizations that covered the detention.
The case unfolds as ICE activity has intensified under the current administration with arrests climbing to nearly 50,000 in July, the highest monthly figure in the ongoing enforcement push, PBS News reported. The Department of Homeland Security has promoted self-deportation options that include a $3,000 payment and free flight through the CBP Home App, repeating phrasing that detention represents a choice for those without legal status. Officials described Yiannopoulos as an illegal alien from the United Kingdom in their initial statement on the matter.
