Mitte’s representatives announced the death in a statement distributed to multiple news organizations including the BBC, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. They described him as a beloved actor, philanthropist and passionate disability rights advocate who drew from his personal experience with cerebral palsy to inform his performances. Local police in Brownsville responded to a call at his home around midday on Monday and found him deceased, with the county justice of the peace declaring the time of death at 1:32 p.m. local time. An autopsy has been ordered to establish the cause while authorities said they do not suspect foul play at this stage.

The actor appeared in all 62 episodes of Breaking Bad across its five seasons from 2008 to 2013, a series that amassed 58 Primetime Emmy nominations and 16 wins according to production records. He portrayed the son of Bryan Cranston’s character, incorporating elements of his own cerebral palsy into the role that creator Vince Gilligan had based on a college friend with the condition. A Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding ensemble performance in a drama series came to the cast in 2014 for their work on the show that many critics have ranked among the greatest television productions.

In addition to his signature role, Mitte featured in the series Switched at Birth and The Guardians of Justice as well as films such as The Oak Room and the newly released Talking to Strangers. He had been actively promoting the romantic tragedy film in recent podcast interviews, including one with Joe Vulpis where he discussed the origins of his Breaking Bad character. His move to Los Angeles in 2006 followed early aspirations to use acting as a means to educate viewers about living with a disability.

Mitte served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s while leading The Mitte Foundation to advance philanthropic causes and combat stereotypes around disabilities. His representative noted that he built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion through his work both on and off screen. The actor received the SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award in 2013 for his contributions to portraying characters with disabilities.

Born on August 21, 1992, in Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte was adopted as an infant after suffering brain damage during a complicated birth that led to his cerebral palsy diagnosis at age three. He relied on leg braces and crutches for much of his youth before pursuing opportunities in Hollywood with the support of a talent manager. He made an uncredited debut on Hannah Montana prior to landing the part that would define his career.

Co-stars offered tributes following the news of his passing. Aaron Paul stated, “I am at a loss. I am heartbroken over this news. RJ, I love you my friend. You will be missed.” Dean Norris recalled looking out for the young actor on set, describing him as a sweetheart of a young man whose loss is heartbreaking. Mitte had been engaged to Kennedy Suarez, with the couple having dated since 2018.
