US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the start of Operation Economic Outcast at the direction of President Donald Trump with the aim of blocking every revenue source that sustains the Iranian regime and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps according to a statement from the US Department of the Treasury. The operation imposes new sanctions across five critical sectors including digital assets technology gold aviation and shipping while targeting more than 60 entities individuals and vessels involved in oil smuggling nuclear procurement and cyber activities. Bessent stated that Iran now faces a clear choice between complete global isolation with a subsistence economy or a return to normalcy and rejoining the global economy adding that the clock is ticking for those who continue to enable the regime. The measures expand secondary sanctions risks for any party continuing business with Tehran and seek to remove facilitators from the US dollar system he said in remarks prepared for delivery.
Iran dismissed the announcement and warned that it would shut down all oil exports from the Persian Gulf if the economic pressure continues Reuters reported. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority a body established by Iran to oversee the waterway blacklisted 45 tankers for violating transit rules and threatened them with fines detention and cargo confiscation according to an official post on X. Mohsen Rezaei secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council stated that any country participating in or supporting the US economic campaign against the Iranian people would be regarded as committing an act of war. Iranian officials further issued new instructions barring shipping from passing through the Strait of Hormuz without explicit permission.
The Strait of Hormuz has remained effectively blocked since the outbreak of conflict at the end of February 2026 disrupting approximately one fifth of global oil and gas transit flows according to shipping industry assessments. International Energy Agency data places current Persian Gulf crude and product exports at roughly 15 million barrels per day down from prewar levels near 25 million barrels per day with the shortfall partially offset by inventories and alternative routes. Brent crude prices surged to $118 per barrel in the war’s early weeks but have since settled around $90 per barrel while US gasoline prices have climbed above $4 a gallon contributing to higher living costs.
Bessent outlined the initiative in an opinion piece for the Financial Times where he described the effort as an economic D-Day and asserted that US military actions had already dismantled much of Iran’s military infrastructure and nuclear capabilities. The Treasury has mapped every node facilitator and network used by Iran to evade existing sanctions and generate revenue the statement said. Any remaining financial tie to Tehran whether intentional or overlooked will accelerate the economic isolation of involved countries and entities Bessent added.
The latest sanctions build on restrictions first intensified after the United States withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018 and reimposed measures on foreign banks and firms trading with Iran. Attempts during the subsequent administration to revive elements of that accord did not succeed and the current campaign follows an April wave of penalties imposed when military operations failed to force a surrender. Treasury officials indicated that the operation marks a shift from managing the Iranian threat to ending it through coordinated action across multiple agencies.
Global energy markets continue to absorb the cumulative effects of the six month conflict with refined product margins reaching record highs in Europe and the United States according to market reports. European diesel cracks have more than tripled since the war began while US diesel margins exceeded $100 per barrel at points this month. Analysts monitoring the situation noted that prewar fuel stockpiles have largely been depleted leaving markets more exposed to any further supply interruptions in the Persian Gulf.
