Authorities in Chile’s Araucania region reported that a fire broke out around 10:30 p.m. on September 11 at the El Edén nursing home in Villa Comuy near Pitrufquén some 640 kilometers south of Santiago where 26 residents many with mobility issues were present. A lone caregiver managed to evacuate 10 of them to safety before the flames spread through the single-story building which firefighters from multiple companies battled until early Saturday morning according to local police and municipal statements. The 16 victims were found by responders after the fire was extinguished and debris clearance began with police cordoning off the area as identification of the charred remains continued.
Prosecutor Jorge Granada assigned to the case stated that his team along with specialized Carabineros units OS9 and Labocar as well as fire experts is examining the scene to establish the fire’s origin cause and whether third parties were involved. Granada added that investigators will also review the conditions in which the residents lived and confirm if the facility held all necessary operating permits. The regional health secretariat had previously documented operational problems at the site which an official described as contributing to the scale of the tragedy.
Regional health official Jose Bravo told reporters the private care home was unregulated and had faced administrative proceedings fines and repeat violations since 2019. Bravo noted it was subject to sanitary enforcement actions while Mayor Jacqueline Romero said the municipality sent a letter in February specifically requesting an inspection due to noncompliance. Romero who declared three days of local mourning confirmed the survivors were taken to hospital evaluated and later placed in temporary accommodation at a nearby high school with none in grave condition.
Local responders including municipal health and public safety teams joined firefighters and police in the operation according to Romero who addressed the community directly. “It is a situation that fills our souls with great sorrow and pain. We have been… providing support to the families” she said. The mayor’s comments came as images of the engulfed building circulated on social media heightening calls for accountability over oversight failures at such facilities.
President José Antonio Kast announced he had ordered a full review of nursing homes nationwide in response to the incident. “We will fully collaborate with the justice system to clarify what happened determine where failures may have existed in oversight or prevention identify what alerts were raised and what actions were taken in response to them” Kast said. He added “We need to know the truth and based on that correct whatever is necessary to do everything possible to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.”
A similar fire at a nursing home in Providencia earlier in March 2026 left one resident dead and 16 others injured highlighting recurring safety concerns in elderly care according to La Nacion reports. The archbishop of Santiago commented on the broader societal issues exposed by the Pitrufquén tragedy describing what he termed the precarity and abandonment affecting many older adults in the country a point echoed in coverage by La Tercera. Officials have not yet released the victims’ names pending further forensic work by the assigned teams.
