The Qatar News Agency announced that Ali Tamer qualified for the final of the men’s 200m freestyle at the 2026 Asian Games. The heats for the event were conducted on September 23 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre in Japan. Tamer’s advancement continues the positive momentum for Qatar’s swimming team at the multi-sport event.
Gulf Times reported that the Qatari delegation to the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games consists of 427 members, including 243 athletes. Six swimmers represent the country in the aquatics program, which encompasses 41 individual and relay events. The team has already qualified for the 4x200m freestyle relay final, with Tamer participating in the qualifying heat.
Earlier in the competition, Tamer set a national record in the 100m freestyle by clocking 48.65 seconds, according to a Qatar News Agency release. That performance saw him advance to the final of that event as well. The swimmer has been instrumental in several of Qatar’s aquatics entries during the Games.
In the 200m freestyle final, China’s Zhang Zhanshuo set a new Asian record of 1:43.49 seconds to claim gold, Xinhua reported. Hwang Sun-woo of South Korea finished second in 1:44.62 seconds, and Tatsuya Murasa of Japan placed third with 1:44.81 seconds. These results underscore the high level of competition in the event that Tamer reached.
The Asian Games swimming competition continues through the coming days with various events still to be contested.
