Russian authorities confirmed that the overnight assault on Nizhnekamsk, more than 1,100 kilometers from the Ukrainian frontier, lasted several hours and resulted in civilian casualties including at least one child. Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belyayev reported the toll and noted that Tatarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov had announced a period of mourning across the republic. “This is a tremendous pain for all of us,” Belyayev said, according to accounts carried by both BBC News and Reuters. This latest incident forms part of a pattern of Ukrainian long-range drone operations against Russian energy infrastructure that have escalated in recent months, a Reuters assessment found. The same refinery was targeted in June, sustaining unspecified damage, while an April 2024 strike affected a primary refining unit processing 155,000 barrels per day without causing critical outages, according to industry sources cited by Reuters then. Ukrainian officials have claimed such attacks aim to disrupt Russia’s ability to sustain its military campaign.
Ukraine has not issued an immediate comment on the Tatarstan strike. Russian officials meanwhile reported downing more than 450 Ukrainian drones over recent periods as part of enhanced air defenses. The deep strike underscores the expanding reach of Kyiv’s unmanned aerial capabilities, which have increasingly penetrated far into Russian territory according to multiple reports.
The Tatarstan attack coincided with continued Russian strikes on Ukrainian population centers. A combined drone and missile barrage last week killed 21 civilians in Kyiv and another five in Kharkiv, local Ukrainian authorities reported. Civilian deaths on both sides have mounted as the conflict enters its fifth year.
The mourning period declared by Minnikhanov will allow residents to honor the victims, Belyayev indicated in his public remarks. Fuel supply concerns have eased after earlier disruptions from similar refinery attacks, Russian authorities maintained in statements to media outlets. No further details on the extent of damage at the Nizhnekamsk facility were available immediately after the incident.
