President Donald Trump deflected blame for his party’s losses in the midterm elections onto Republican candidates while offering praise to Democrats for their performance. Speaking to Fox News the president said he was a little surprised at the outcome but added that the Democrats did a good job they fought hard. He noted that the party had been opposing him for years and had been aiming for the Senate majority for over a decade according to the interview broadcast on November 4 2026.

In a post on Truth Social Trump singled out Texas Governor Greg Abbott for defeat in his re-election bid to Democrat Gina Hinojosa. If Greg Abbott the Governor of Texas hadn’t become a RINO in the last six months of his Political Life he wouldn’t have lost Trump wrote. The president claimed Abbott had reverted to previous positions without success and suggested that his own absence from the ballot was a key factor in the Republican underperformance a point echoed in reports by Reuters and Bloomberg.

Trump told The New York Times that he accepted the results fully. I am absolutely willing to accept them he said while expressing willingness to collaborate with the incoming Democratic leadership. In the Fox News call he indicated that Democrats would propose extreme measures that he would veto predicting eventual cooperation after several such vetoes.

The losses occurred against a backdrop of economic discontent with a Reuters/Ipsos poll from before the election showing Trump’s approval rating at 32 percent and cost of living as the dominant voter issue. Trump linked part of the defeat to the ongoing conflict with Iran which drove up fuel prices. I don’t think it’s the war I think it’s a gasoline price he explained adding that voters supported his Iran strategy but disliked the immediate financial impact.

Bloomberg reported that Trump did not assume responsibility for the defeats that extended into traditionally conservative states. The Democratic takeover of Congress is expected to constrain the president’s remaining legislative priorities over the next two years. Trump nevertheless indicated he would seek areas of agreement with Democrats on certain policy matters.
