President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that he was banning journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House effective immediately as a result of their constant reporting of what he termed fake news. A BBC video showed Trump saying the ban on some news outlets is because they’re fake news. According to The New York Times, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office later that day the decision stemmed from cumulative coverage and that he was tired of reading and seeing fake news.
The announcement included a warning that other fake news media outlets could follow, Forbes reported. CNN issued a statement describing the threatened ban as an illegal assault on a fundamental and constitutionally protected right under the US Constitution. Journalists from the three organizations continued working on the White House grounds Friday afternoon with no immediate signs they were being removed.
This action continues a pattern of media restrictions since Trump returned to office in January 2025. The administration had earlier barred the Associated Press from press pool events and Air Force One after the outlet refused to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, a Guardian assessment found. Trump has also blocked individual reporters from traveling with him on official trips over disliked coverage.
In his first term, the White House revoked CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s credentials in 2018, a step a federal court ordered reversed. Similar First Amendment challenges are expected following the latest proclamation, with experts pointing to precedents that protect press access to government functions. Trump responded to questions about court survival by saying he did not think a court should allow fake news day after day.
Trump elaborated in the Oval Office that the outlets purposely write negative news to diminish the Republican administration despite what he called a fantastic job. The president emphasized the need for honesty from the media. A Reuters dispatch noted the White House referred questions to the president’s spoken comments.
MS NOW, the rebranded former MSNBC that separated from NBCUniversal in 2025, offered no immediate comment on the development. Politico likewise had not responded as of Friday evening. The move comes as Trump has repeatedly urged regulators to act against broadcasters he views unfavorably.
