The organizing committee for the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in the French Alps announced the resignation of president Edgar Grospiron during an executive board meeting, according to Qatar News Agency. Grospiron, the 1992 Olympic moguls champion, had served roughly 18 months after taking up the post in February 2025. The committee described the departure as an orderly and responsible transition aimed at advancing project governance and moving the organization into a new operational phase.
Governance crises have affected the committee for months with internal disputes contributing to multiple resignations, Qatar News Agency reported. Former chief executive Cyril Linette stepped down in February 2026 citing insurmountable disagreements with Grospiron, BBC Sport reported. Chief operating officer Anne Murac and communications director Arthur Richer were among other officials who had already left their positions, an Associated Press dispatch noted.
In a statement the organizing committee said “His decision to leave the presidency is part of a deliberate, organised and fully assumed transition, taken in the interests of the project and its governance.” It added that the move reflected a shared desire with stakeholders to enable the organisation to quickly enter this new operational phase. Grospiron wrote on LinkedIn that after several months of tension he had concluded that the conditions were not met for him to continue this.
The International Olympic Committee acknowledged the resignation and thanked Grospiron for his crucial work in laying the foundations for the success of the Alps 2030 Games, the Associated Press reported. The IOC added that it would continue working in close collaboration with the organizing committee. An extraordinary general assembly is planned for September 14 to put an interim presidency in place until a successor is appointed, Reuters reported.
The 2030 Winter Olympics are scheduled to take place from February 1 to 17 across venues in the French Alps, according to organizers. The project originated from a bid process that concluded in 2023 and has encountered logistical challenges from the start, an Associated Press report indicated. Key stakeholders including the French government, regional authorities and the French Olympic and Paralympic committees had signaled to the IOC last month that trust had been broken with the leadership.
Grospiron was appointed after biathlon star Martin Fourcade withdrew his candidacy for the role, multiple reports noted. His tenure followed an earlier governance crisis that had already prompted several senior exits before his own departure. The French Olympic Committee president had publicly noted in July that the project was once again facing governance problems, BBC Sport reported.
