Poland’s Iga Swiatek simultaneously claimed the Toronto Masters title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Elena Rybakina in the women’s final. Shelton’s win marked his seventh career ATP title and fourth of the season while Swiatek collected her 26th WTA title and 12th at the 1000 level.
According to ATP Tour records Shelton became the first player to defend the National Bank Open title since Rafael Nadal achieved back-to-back victories in 2018 and 2019. The left-hander moved up four places to No. 6 in the ATP rankings following the result. ATP Tour data places this triumph as his second consecutive Canadian Masters 1000 title after last year’s success in Toronto.
Shelton completed the Montreal event without dropping a set across his five matches a feat the ATP Tour noted as his first such run to a title. WTA Tennis reported that Swiatek’s straight-sets win over the world No. 2 improved her career record in WTA finals to 26-5. The victory represented her first title since the end of 2025 and propelled her back into the top five of the WTA rankings. WTA statistics show Swiatek had reached the Toronto final after overcoming Elina Svitolina in the semifinals in a match that required three sets.
The Toronto final lasted 68 minutes with Swiatek breaking Rybakina’s serve four times while saving all three break points she faced according to WTA Tour data. This result comes after the 25-year-old exited Wimbledon in the third round earlier this summer. The Pole will carry significant momentum into the final Grand Slam of the year as one of the favourites.
Both champions now turn their attention to the US Open which begins in New York later this month.
