RM Sotheby’s reported that a one-of-a-kind first production example of Ferrari’s inaugural fully electric vehicle sold for $40 million at its Monterey Car Week auction in California. The Luce Chassis 0, configured to U.S. specifications through the marque’s Tailor Made program, far surpassed a pre-sale estimate above $1.1 million. All proceeds from the transaction will support the Ferrari Foundation and its educational programs, the auction house confirmed.
Ferrari launched the Luce as its first all-electric production model in 2026 following years of hybrid development in earlier vehicles such as the LaFerrari. The model produces 1,050 horsepower, accelerates from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in 2.5 seconds and provides an estimated range of 530 kilometres, according to manufacturer specifications. Bloomberg reported that the entire 2026 production run sold out in less than 60 days despite initial customer reservations.
Former Apple chief designer Jony Ive contributed to the Luce’s development, resulting in a distinctive aesthetic that has generated varied reactions across automotive circles. AppleInsider noted that the specific chassis sold represents the first example to exit the production line. The sale establishes the Luce as the highest price achieved by any new vehicle at public auction.
Auction records show the $40 million result exceeded the previous $34.6 million paid for a McLaren F1, though that earlier transaction involved a decades-old example rather than a contemporary production car. The Monterey event regularly features significant sales of both historic and modern vehicles. RM Sotheby’s described the Luce transaction as exceptional for a current-model Ferrari.
Ferrari first outlined its electrification roadmap in 2021, committing to an all-electric vehicle by the middle of the decade while preserving core performance values, company statements indicate. The Luce arrives as luxury manufacturers respond to tightening emissions standards in major markets. CarExpert reported that the full auction amount will advance the Ferrari Foundation’s work in education and talent development.
The buyer of the Chassis 0 example has not been identified in auction disclosures. Monterey Car Week has grown into one of the automotive calendar’s premier gatherings for collectors and specialists. Additional examples of the Luce are expected to reach customers later in 2026 following the record sale.
