Chesterfield County Police announced the arrest of 19-year-old Camron Harris of Henrico on Saturday afternoon after an investigation identified him as the suspect in the Virginia State University shooting. Officers discovered Harris hiding in a closet inside Seward Hall, a co-ed residence hall on campus, before taking him into custody around 4 p.m. and transporting him to the county jail where he faces eight felony warrants including four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Harris, who is not a university student, is being held without bond while the probe continues and authorities ask the public to call 804-748-1251 with any information, according to the department.
The shooting broke out around 1:28 a.m. on August 15, 2026, outside residence halls on the Virginia State University campus south of Richmond where five people aged 17 to 23 suffered gunshot wounds. A 21-year-old man remained in critical condition while the other four victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and all were transported to local hospitals, a university statement said. Only one of those wounded was a VSU student, Chesterfield County Police reported as dormitories had opened the day before with classes set to begin the following Monday.
Lt. James R. Lamb of the Chesterfield County Police Department stated that officers responded believing multiple shooters were involved in the incident that led to a temporary campus lockdown. The department later centered its charges on Harris though the investigation remains ongoing to determine whether additional people participated. Campus and local police coordinated at the scene where the victims were located shortly after the early morning reports, according to authorities.
Virginia State University, a historically black institution with more than 5,000 students, experienced another shooting in the same area of campus earlier that week in which one person was injured, local news reports indicated. The timing of the latest violence coincides with the start of the academic year at the school that was established to provide higher education to African Americans previously denied such opportunities. University officials confirmed the response by law enforcement without releasing further details on victim identities beyond the initial medical transports.
The incident highlights broader patterns of gun violence at historically black colleges and universities where Black Americans face elevated risks, Brady United data shows. Despite making up 14 percent of the U.S. population, Black people account for 60 percent of annual firearm homicide victims with young Black males aged 18 to 24 nearly 19 times more likely to die from such violence than white peers in the same age group. A Creighton University study documented at least three HBCUs experiencing fatal shootings between 2015 and 2016 alone.
Virginia has seen some of the nation’s most severe campus attacks including the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting that killed 32 people and wounded 17 others, an Al Jazeera assessment recalled. At least four shootings occurred on or near university campuses over a single weekend in 2022, an Everytown for Gun Safety press release from that period noted. The Giffords Law Center places the overall gun death rate among Black Americans at 2.6 times that of white Americans with an average of nearly 13,600 Black people dying from gun violence each year.
Chesterfield County Police continue to work with campus security and federal agencies including the ATF to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the gunfire. No additional charges had been announced as of Saturday evening though officials indicated the possibility of further developments. Harris was processed at the county jail following his arrest as the university community prepares for the start of classes amid the ongoing inquiry.
