Dublin Police Services responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire at the Dublin Sports Grounds shortly after 3 p.m. on September 26, when a sergeant driving nearby discovered Jonathan McKinsey, 40, lying in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses described hearing a rapid series of shots before seeing the victim fall, according to accounts given to local broadcasters.
The New York Times confirmed that McKinsey had served as director of engineering for games player experience since joining the company in 2023. Police identified the suspects as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77 and residents of Dublin, who are McKinsey’s parents-in-law through his marriage to their daughter Candice Jang. Officers arrested the couple minutes later after they remained near the scene, Dublin Police Services said in a statement.
Zhang and Chen were booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder and related charges, with an arraignment scheduled for Wednesday morning in East County Hall of Justice. It was not immediately clear whether the couple had obtained legal representation. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting, according to police statements.
Court documents obtained by NBC News show McKinsey and Jang were locked in a bitter divorce and custody dispute involving their three young children at the time of the killing. Jang secured a temporary domestic violence restraining order against McKinsey last year, while he responded with his own filing alleging abuse by Jang and her parents. The pair had been married since approximately 2012, and a hearing in their case had been set for the following week, CNN reported.
Additional court records cited by the New York Post indicate McKinsey faced misdemeanor child abuse charges after Jang reported him to police for striking their six-year-old son in the face and using rough physical discipline. Jang alleged that McKinsey had previously threatened to kill her and her parents and had given the children a book about a mother’s death that frightened them. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that both sides had traded allegations of abuse throughout the proceedings.
Witnesses told KGO-TV they observed the couple walking together before casually departing the area following the gunfire, with one account describing masked assailants taking turns shooting. Dublin Police Services credited bystander calls with enabling the rapid arrests and stated that no other suspects are being sought. The department added that the sports grounds reopened after the initial closure for investigation.
The New York Times declined to comment beyond confirming McKinsey’s employment and role at the organization. McKinsey had studied computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, prior to his technology career, according to biographical details shared in coverage by Firstpost. Detectives continue examining evidence to establish the full circumstances surrounding the homicide, police said.
