Hundreds of people attended the consecration of the enormous Virgin Mary statue in Konotopie on August 15, 2026, according to an Associated Press report from the site. Helicopters scattered miniature red roses over the crowd while priests in white robes celebrated Mass and the Mazowsze folk ensemble performed traditional Polish music. Former president Lech Wałęsa, an 82-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner who led the Solidarity movement against communism, sat in the front row. Wałęsa told the AP that the event represented the end of his path, stating “This is the end of my path. I started with the Virgin Mary and I end with the Virgin Mary.”
The 55.6-metre structure, which includes a 15-metre crown-shaped pedestal, was commissioned by local millionaires Roman Karkosik and his wife Grażyna, France 24 reported. Karkosik, a 75-year-old entrepreneur who built his fortune through plastic-bottle manufacturing in the 1990s and later investments on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, covered the estimated cost of 100 million zlotys, about $26 million. The couple, who live in a palace near the village, described the project as an expression of gratitude to God. Grażyna Karkosik told the AP that “The statue will be for all people. Each of us coming to see it will think more deeply about their own lives, not only about God.”
Local authorities anticipate that the statue, equipped with a viewing platform inside the pedestal, will draw pilgrims and tourists to the village of fewer than 150 residents, the Associated Press noted. Construction began in March 2025 as a religious gesture by the Karkosiks. The development aligns with strong Catholic devotion that persists in rural parts of the country.
Bishop Wiesław Mering addressed the gathering and later told the AP that he observed a weakening of the church institution along with a withdrawal of certain social categories from Catholicism. The bishop said this development hurt him. He added that the history of Christianity has ups and downs but that “this place is a reminder that Mary won’t give up on Poland.”
Poland remains an overwhelmingly Catholic nation where the church gained prestige for supporting the anti-communist opposition that eventually brought down the former regime, according to the Associated Press assessment. Wałęsa himself wore a Black Madonna pin during his campaigns and has long credited his faith with sustaining him through those years. The country is also the homeland of St. John Paul II, whose giant statue was unveiled in Czestochowa more than a decade earlier.
The new monument surpasses the 52-metre Christ the King statue in Świebodzin that was unveiled in 2010 and stands nearly 18 metres taller than Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer when pedestals are included, multiple outlets reported. A 98-metre Virgin Mary statue in the Philippines exceeds it but lies outside Europe. Opinions among residents remain divided, with some telling AFP that the substantial funds might have been better allocated to a hospital or orphanage instead.
