CNN Indonesia reported that Bechi was returned to Lapas Kelas I Malang at 11:25 local time on October 8 after his conditional release was officially canceled by the Directorate General of Corrections. The prison chief Christo Victor Nixon Toar said the convict entered the facility cooperatively without any resistance and followed all directives from officers. Toar added that Bechi was placed in a special cell as a precaution to maintain order given the high level of public interest in the sensitive case.

Kompas.com reported that the decision to revoke Bechi’s parole was contained in an official letter signed on September 30 and received by East Java corrections officials on October 6. Bechi had been freed on August 20 2025 after serving just over three years of a seven-year term thanks to religious and general remissions granted under Indonesian regulations. A government review triggered by the revelations determined that procedural errors had occurred in approving the early release according to multiple local outlets.

Bechi was convicted in November 2022 by the Surabaya District Court of sexual assault under Article 289 of the Criminal Code in combination with another provision detik.com reported from the verdict. Judges imposed the seven-year sentence even though prosecutors had sought the maximum 16 years on a rape charge of which he was acquitted. The offenses took place at the Shiddiqiyyah Islamic boarding school in Ploso Jombang where Bechi taught and which is run by his father a prominent Islamic cleric.

A survivor known as FP testified to a parliamentary hearing broadcast on October 7 that victims continued to face intimidation doxing and structural obstacles years after the abuse Kompas.com said. She explained that diplomas from the pesantren lacked national student identification numbers making it difficult to find employment or continue studies. FP told lawmakers the school had never undergone government audits and that the site of the crimes had later been converted into a clinic.

The BBC investigation published in September 2026 included undercover footage of Bechi attending family events at the school complex as recently as March that year. That reporting which also uncovered further allegations from other former students sparked widespread public condemnation and prompted lawmakers to demand a full inquiry. In response the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections announced a comprehensive review of the parole process applied to Bechi.

Immigration and Corrections Minister Agus Andrianto told the BBC that officials who approved the early release will certainly face sanctions. A Komnas Perempuan assessment found that pesantren ranked second among educational institutions for reported sexual violence cases with 17 documented between 2020 and 2024 while the commission recorded 475 gender-based violence cases across the education sector in 2025 affecting 972 victims. Bechi is now expected to complete the remainder of his original seven-year sentence which had been due to end in 2029.
