Anthropic said in an announcement on its website that it will commit 5 percent of its shares to the newly created Anthropic Public Benefit Fund subject to stockholder approval. The fund’s stake could increase with an additional 2 percent of shares added at the board’s discretion for every 50 percent rise in the company’s value above a yet-to-be-disclosed baseline. This commitment arrives as the artificial intelligence developer prepares for what analysts project could be one of the largest initial public offerings in history.

The San Francisco-based firm which operates as a public benefit corporation established the fund as a wholly owned limited liability company to provide greater flexibility in its activities rather than adopting a traditional nonprofit structure. None of the equity held by the fund will be used for lobbying or political donations in the United States or abroad according to the company’s statement. This approach enables the fund to adapt between different forms of support for public good initiatives.

Potential priorities for the fund include substantial donations to traditional nonprofits direct distributions to specific populations and programs tackling artificial intelligence’s effects on employment Anthropic reported. The company has previously committed $200 million toward studying and mitigating AI’s labor market impacts but indicated that the speed of progress may demand more ambitious measures. A Pew Research Center survey conducted earlier this year found that 71 percent of U.S. adults believe AI will lead to fewer jobs in the United States over the next 20 years.

The latest move extends commitments made at Anthropic’s 2021 founding when its co-founders including chief executive Dario Amodei pledged to donate 80 percent of their equity holdings. The firm also runs an equity donation matching program for staff with roughly half of employees taking part the announcement stated. Combined with those efforts approximately 20 percent of Anthropic shares will support public benefit causes plus any further amounts triggered by future valuation growth.

Anthropic raised $65 billion in a Series H funding round in May 2026 that placed its post-money valuation at $965 billion according to the company’s disclosure. Projections for its anticipated initial public offering have ranged above $1 trillion with some forecasts exceeding $2 trillion according to Al Jazeera. The developer has emphasized safety in its work on models such as Claude while warning in regulatory filings that advanced AI systems could present catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.

Elon Musk whose xAI serves as a competitor responded on X by recommending that the shares be given directly to the public and adding that this is the approach he will pursue Reuters reported. Anthropic indicated it will release additional information in the coming months regarding the fund’s governance specific valuation thresholds and operational details. Updates on the fund’s progress will also feature in the company’s next public benefit report.
