Ukrainian assault units have recaptured several square kilometres of territory in a sector of the front line over the past fortnight, according to assessments by the Institute for the Study of War. The advances involved coordinated infantry and drone operations that relied heavily on satellite communications to overcome Russian electronic jamming. A BBC team embedded with the forces observed Ukrainian soldiers using Starlink dishes to maintain links between command posts and forward positions during the operation that began in early October.

The inside Ukrainian offensive pushing Russia back on front line where Starlink plays a key role has highlighted the system’s resilience under combat conditions, a Ukrainian brigade commander told the BBC. Starlink has allowed operators to direct strikes on Russian supply routes even when traditional radio networks failed, the commander added. Data from the Ukrainian General Staff places the number of successful drone missions in the sector at more than 200 since the push began.

SpaceX has supplied over 40,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, according to company statements released last year. The terminals provide broadband connectivity that a Royal United Services Institute assessment found has reduced Ukrainian command-and-control delays by up to 80 percent in contested areas. Russian forces have attempted to disrupt the system through targeted strikes and jamming, yet operators reported that backup kits allowed them to restore service within minutes.

Soldiers from the 88th Separate Mechanised Brigade described navigating minefields and artillery fire while maintaining live video feeds via Starlink to adjust tactics on the move. One sergeant told the BBC team that the technology had prevented several friendly-fire incidents by confirming target locations in real time. External analysis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies notes that similar Starlink-dependent operations have contributed to Ukraine retaining the initiative in at least three border sectors since August.

Logistical challenges persist despite the gains, with Ukrainian supply lines stretched across contested terrain, a defence ministry briefing in Kyiv stated earlier this week. The offensive has also drawn Russian reinforcements from other fronts, according to satellite imagery reviewed by Maxar Technologies. Ukrainian officials have not released overall casualty figures for the current operation, though brigade sources described losses as lighter than in previous assaults due to improved situational awareness.

Western military aid packages have included additional Starlink kits as part of broader security assistance valued at $2.1 billion since January, the U.S. State Department figures show. The technology’s role extends beyond communications to powering reconnaissance drones and medical evacuation coordination, a NATO defence support report published in September indicated. Ukrainian forces continue to press the advantage in the sector while preparing for potential Russian counter-attacks expected in the coming weeks.
